Pick-Up Massachusetts was established by the alcohol beverages industry to improve the environment by organizing community trash pick ups in cities and towns across the state. Pick Up Massachusetts” is far more than an effective anti-litter campaign because it is action focused. Led by the alcohol beverages industry, MASSPACK and retails stores, Pick-Up Massachusetts encourages citizens not to litter, while also sponsoring and organizing community trash pickup events throughout Massachusetts. Over a hundred community pick ups have been organized and produced by participating MASSPACK member stores. The “Great Revere Clean Up,” the “Worcester Clean Up,” the “Salem Summer Sweep” along with numerous clean ups in western MA, the Cape and in Cambridge were all part of the “Pick Up Massachusetts” effort to remove litter. Help push back against litter in Massachusetts by organizing or participating in one of Pick-Up Mass' cleanup events in your area. Together, we can Pick Up Massachusetts!

How to Organize a Cleanup Event in your Area

Organizing a litter clean up can be a very effective way for locally owned alcohol retail stores to build relationships with community members, and show that there are ways forward to effectively address litter in Massachusetts. Hosting a cleanup event in your area is an easy process that MASSPACK can help to make happen. Below are steps for a store to set up their own cleanup.

1. Identify the an "Event Host." This can be your store, another retailer, or a community member. The Event Host usually provides a central location (storefront, parking lot, etc) for an event kickoff and closing, but some cases may call for other meeting locations. The Event Host should also consider reaching out to local environmental/community organizations for their participation/partnership. Pick-Up Massachusetts can help.

2. Decide on a date and time for the cleanup. Scheduling clean ups on Saturday mornings or early afternoons has been very successful in the past.

3. Reach out to MASSPACK with your intention of hosting a cleanup and the information that you have gathered through the steps above. MASSPACK will then coordinate with the Pick-Up Massachusetts team who will then help create promotional materials to advertise the cleanup, order cleanup supplies such as litter pickup tools, plastic bags, safety garments and refreshments for the volunteers.

4. Enjoy the day by helping to pick up and remove litter in your community!
