Beverage Alcohol Training (BAT)

Produced By
Massachusetts Package Stores Association

Your Chance to Train Package Store Staff for Safe and Legal Alcohol Sales

The ABCC and Local Licensing Authorities have increased the scrutiny on how off-premises retailers of beer, wine & spirits operate their businesses. There are several reasons for the high burden placed upon local stores. One is a heightened awareness and urgency to eliminate illegal sales and to keep alcohol out of the hands of underage persons. Another is to safely raise revenues for the state through orderly regulation. The result is that retailers who fail to follow outlined procedures and regulations will face severe criminal and civil penalties. These penalties could also cost store owners their package store business.

To protect your investment, MASSPACK provides Beverage Alcohol Training (BAT) and certification for beer, wine, and spirits store owners and their employees. The BAT course is like no other offered to off premises retailers in Massachusetts. BAT provides training in many very important areas that are specific to off premises retailers in Massachusetts. Examples include:

  • Recognizing fake and altered ID's;
  • Handling intoxicated and problem customers;
  • Preventing sales to legal customers who are buying for underage people; and
  • Alcohol transportation and delivery

It is repeatedly proven that stores who offer BAT to their employees are less likely to engage in illegal sales than stores that do not train their staff. Each BAT seminar provides in-depth coverage on relevant subjects with ample time for student interaction. Testing for certification is part of the training course. The three-year certification awarded to participants will satisfy the requirements of local authorities across Massachusetts. BAT certification may also save your store(s) a great deal of money on liability insurance.

MASSPACK offers VIRTUAL BAT classes and certification throughout the year. In person training options can also be arranged. Dates and locations for the next series of BAT seminars and testing are now posted (see below).

MASSPACK members are able to take advantage of reduced rates to attend or send your employees to the trainings. Do not hesitate to call the MASSPACK Office if you have questions or need further information.
